Honey Boo Boo’s odd Watch and Sniff promotion

We're about to discuss Honey Boo Boo. If the mere mention of this show incites anger within you, feel free to click that little X at the top right of your browser window. We know we're just adding to the problem which is Honey Boo Boo, but we're an advertising blog and this method of promotion is worth discussing.

Honey Boo Boo is using an interesting, yet odd Watch and Sniff promotion where viewers follow along with the season premiere with a scratch and sniff card. When viewers see a number on the screen, they scratch one of the numbers on the card, presumably smelling what's occurring on the show.

Horrifying.

There are plenty of shows where a "Watch and Sniff" concept sounds like a brilliant idea. Approximately 99.9% of those shows air on Food Network or on the Cooking Channel – not TLC. Definitely not Honey Boo Boo. Never Honey Boo Boo.

This seems like yet another attempt for TLC and viewers to make fun of this small town family. Here's a card – Now you can be grossed out by how this family smells! Isn't that hilarious?!? Let's all move on, America.

The cards are being distributed inside PEOPLE magazine, within Time Warner stores and handed out by street team members in major cities.
