Jay-Z's new album, Magna Carta Holy Grail, was revealed in a rather interesting way during Game 5 of the NBA Finals. In a large three-minute advertisement for Samsung, Jay-Z revealed that his new creation will drop on July 7th.
As if that's not interesting enough as is, Samsung Galaxy users will be rewarded with the album 72 hours before everyone else (July 4th) when they download a special app on their phone. The offer is limited to the first million downloads.
The ad certainly sparked plenty of conversation. Galaxy users were pleased with the unexpected perk while others thought Jay-Z was selling out. Perhaps what's most interesting is Samsung's role in all of this. It's really no wonder Jay-Z wants to see his album in as many hands as possible and through whatever means necessary, but Samsung's involvement in the music scene is particularly fascinating. It indicates that cell phone companies want to use music as a way to market their phones. Not a bad idea, really.
