This is my kind of ad.
Actor Jonah Hill, best known for roles in Superbad and The Wolf of Wall Street, teamed up with Reebok and the skateboard company Palace to create an ad so intentionally terrible, it’s incredible.
Hill pretends to be at a Palace location, while clearly, he’s standing in front of a green screen. His audio (at times) is poorly dubbed and Hill is reading his lines as awkward and unenthusiastic as possible. He talks about how Palace was collaborating with “some sportswear company called Ree-Boke.” The ad is Hill awkwardly describing the new shoe, as he’s embedded in the shop. It’s brilliant.
Almost all of Hill’s line reads are great, but two of them are my favorite.
He suggests you can get some of the “fastest wooden decks.”
“You want a new board to cruise on? That’s not going to be a problem. You can get some of the fastest wooden decks on the market.. or off.”
While describing the shoes, he compares it to “having the most amazing sex with a rare white tiger on your birthday, and it’s also his birthday as well.”
The ad does bizarre marketing right. Hill is a big celebrity and fully embraces the weirdness of the spot. It’s cringe-comedy/anti-humor at its finest. The run time of the ad is just over two minutes and unlike most ads, you want more.
Hill’s collaboration with Palace and “Ree-Boke” is the best ad I’ve seen in 2016, even if it’s intentionally trying to be terrible.
