Ikea delivers perfect response to $2,145 imitator bag

Sometimes, high-fashion imitates regular, boring old’ everyday items. In this case, we’re not talking about Andy Warhol painting Campbell’s Soup cans, but instead, Balenciaga’s $2,145 carrying bag, inspired by Ikea’s 99-cent, iconic blue tote.

Balenciaga’s Ikea inspiration is obvious. But, the bag is leather and much more accessible as a luxury item. Although, Ikea’s 99 cent bag is nearly indestructible and will last purchasers a very long time. Plus, you can carry all your household item needs as you argue with your partner about what end-table you need to purchase.

With the clearly inspired designer bag generating plenty of conversation online, Ikea put out a perfectly timed ad, showcasing “the original” blue tote bag people have come to love.

Here’s the hilarious fine print, transcribed by AdWeek.

How to identify an original Ikea Frakta bag
1) Shake it. If it rustles, it’s the real deal.
2) Multifunctional. It can carry hockey gear, bricks, and even water.
3) Throw it in the dirt. A true Frakta is simply rinsed off with a garden hose when dirty.
4) Fold it. Are you able to fold it to the size of a small purse? If the answer is yes, congratulations.
5) Look inside. The original has an authentic Ikea tag.
6) Price tag. Only $0.99.

First of all, good on Ikea for taking the whole situation light-heartedly. Who knew Balenciaga of all designers would take inspiration from the Ikea staple. The response is hilarious and a great satire on the silliness of Balenciaga’s knockoff product.

What would you rather have? One Balenciaga bag or more than 2,000 Ikea totes? Checkmate, Ikea – in price, design, functionality, and humor.
