Nintendo turns back time in NES Classic Edition ad

Nintendo is dipping into some sweet nostalgia in their latest advertisement for the upcoming NES Classic Edition.

The gaming company released a new spot for the mini-console, which is a micro version of the Nintendo Entertainment System with 30 games built-in. The console has HD graphics and comes in at a reasonable $59.99. In the advertisement, we’re shown classic games on what appears to be a boob-tube television. It’s designed to look retro and could be easily mistaken as an ad from the 1980’s.

The ad shifts from the grainier, old-school look to HD as the NES transforms into the NES Classic Edition. The boob-tube TV look turns into a full HDMI display. I must say, the games look absolutely stellar. It’s a much-needed touch up to old-school games. The commercial ends with the tag-line “Now you’re playing with power,” which is a shoutout to ad campaigns from more than 30 years ago.

Nintendo does a great job showing off the old and the new, which should appeal to gamers of all generations. The NES Classic isn’t just one of those gimmicky, all-in-one systems either. It features some of the system’s best titles including Mega Man 2, The Legend of Zelda, Punch-Out!! Featuring Mr. Dream and Mario Bros among its 30 excellent titles. You can find a full list here.

After a lengthy post-Nintendo Wii decline, with Pokemon Go and the upcoming NES Classic Edition, Nintendo is hitting home run after home run – like this new nostalgia-packed ad.
